| | | Zinger's Homemade Ice Cream Goes Green Apr 21, 2007 | |
| |
On Earth Day, owner Mike Exinger announced green spoons: not the color green, but as in friendly to the planet.
They are 100 percent biodegradable spoons made from cornstarch.
"An ice cream cone has always been the most earth-friendly snack ever invented," said Zinger's Head Scoop Exinger. "You eat both the ice cream AND the container!" But some prefer ice cream in a dish. Now they can enjoy it in a completely biodegradable container made with grass and reed pulp, and eat it with a non-plastic spoon. Of course, everyone gets a sample from old-fashioned wooden taster spoons, and cleans up with recycled napkins.
"As far as we know, we're the only ice cream parlor on the north coast that makes this kind of effort," Exinger said. "Everyone else offers Styrofoam or plastic, and those containers, while only being used for about 15 minutes, will still be around here in 500 years."
